The application of post-Minkowskian iteration approximation methods in general relativity is investigated analytically, and an algorithm is constructed which can be iterated at any order, defining a formal series in G, the solution to the Einstein vacuum-field equations outside the time axis of the harmonic-coordinate system. Each term of this series is then examined as a function of r and of the speed of light. The approach used combines the multipolar development scheme of Thorne (1980) with a new analytical prolongation technique distinct from that used by Damour (1983). Starting point is a finite set of one-variable C(infinity) functions which are constant in the neighborhood of negative infinity.
