Fifteen comets have now been detected in x-rays using the BeppoSax, Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE), Röntgen Satellite (ROSAT) and Chandra x-ray observatory spacecraft. The most detailed spectra, coming from Chandra x-ray observatory, indicating that a combination of bremsstrahlung, Oxygen and Nitrogen line radiation is a good fit to the data. A unified plasma model has been developed to explain a number of different x-ray emitting sources including comets. The model relies on streaming motion between different plasma populations producing turbulence through various instabilities such as the modified two stream instability (MTSI). Using this plasma model together with the Atomic Data and Analysis Structure (ADAS) software package we model the observed spectra. Our findings confim that the best fit does indeed come from a combination of bremsstrahlung and line radiation, confirming the plasma model.
