Agb And Post-Agb Stars, Circumstellar Matter, Molecules: Co2 And So2

Scientific paper

In this contribution we present an analysis of the ISO/SWS spectra of O-rich AGB stars exhibiting spectral signatures of two dioxides, CO2 and SO2. With an analysis based on synthetic spectra produced by a model assuming LTE conditions, we furthermore show that these dioxides are warm, that the gas is located close to the central star and that the gas density is much higher than previously expected. Seven spectra of the star T Cep taken at different phases show that the SO2 feature changes from emission to absorption on a time scale of twice the pulsation period. This can be quantitatively explained by photodissociation of SO2 molecules by soft UV photons radiated by the central star.
