Visible and near-infrared spectra of the atmospheres of brown dwarfs and extrasolar giant planets are dominated by resonance lines of Na and K, significantly broadened by collisions with neutral species such as He and H_2. The line wings may extend as much as 100 nm to either side of line core. The astrophysical models need accurate line profiles, based on experimental measurements at relevant temperatures. We present an experimental apparatus to measure absolute absorption coefficients in the visible-IR region for alkali vapors colliding with He and H_2. The alkali atom number density is determined by the "hook" method, based on anomalous dispersion in the atomic line interference spectrum. Initial studies will be of the potassium resonance lines broadened by collisions with He. Supported in part by NASA grant NAG5-12751.
