The paper presents a theoretical analysis of the features of electron density in the subauroral F-region connected with the electric fields of magnetospheric substorms. The analysis is based on a simple electric-field model, which takes into account the effect of the field-aligned current on the conducting layer of the subauroral ionosphere. It is shown that this model reproduces the band of rapid westward plasma drift at the equatorial boundary of the auroral oval in the evening sector, with plasma flowing into this band from midlatitudes as well as from the auroral oval region. In the morning sector the plasma drift velocity is significantly lower and is directed toward the east.
