An analytical solution is obtained to the self-consistent problem involving the effect of nonstationary electric fields on the nocturnal F2-layer. The solution reveals typical variations of hmF2 during isolated substorms at midlatitudes as well as certain smaller-scale features of these variations. These effects are confirmed by experimental data.
