An analytical approach is used to study the spatial dependence of the angular velocity in a rotating turbulent fluid sphere. Applying the results to the theory of differential rotation, the role of anisotropic eddy viscosity, negative eddy viscosity and inertia waves becomes clear. It is noted that the characteristic scales of supergranulation and giant cells suggest the presence of negative two-dimensional eddy viscosity on the sun.
