Our dynamic Sun offers exciting opportunities to share research discoveries of NASA’s Sun-Earth Connection with the general public. NASA’s Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum (SECEF), a partnership between UC Berkeley Space Sciences Laboratory and NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center, coordinates programs for broad audiences that highlight solar and geospace missions and research programs. One of SECEF’s primary goals is to facilitate space scientist involvement in education and public outreach through popular events at high visibility venues such as science museums and planetaria. Over the past five years, SECEF has partnered with the Exploratorium museum in San Francisco to produce total solar eclipse webcasts from remote sites, using this engaging natural event as a catalyst to share Sun-Earth Connection research with the general public. We will discuss our past successes, focusing on the Eclipse 2001 webcast from Zambia, Africa, and will present upcoming opportunities that include Venus Transit in 2004, an Ancient Solar Observatory webcast series in 2005, and the March 29, 2006 total solar eclipse occurring over Africa, Europe, and Russia.
