Results obtained from a spectroscopically complete sample of 52 faint optically selected active galactic nuclei (quasars and Seyfert galaxies) with J less than or equal to 22.0 are presented and discussed. From a comparison of the quasars selected with three different selection, criteria (colors and variability) applied on the same field, the maximum level of incompleteness expected on the sample is estimated. Results for the counts of quasars as a function of magnitude in different redshift and luminosity ranges are presented and compared with those obtained from the analysis of a large composite sample resulting from the combination of ten different surveys.
