The present status of knowledge of the solar constant and the solar spectral irradiance is described. The most probable value of the solar constant is 1366 + or - 5W/sq m. As to a possible variability no conclusions can be drawn. Accurate determinations over extended periods of time are therefore recommended. The accuracy of the solar spectral irradiance in the energetic bulk part of the spectrum is poor, partly due to instrumental and calibration problems. Recommendations to improve this situation are given.
