The transfer of radiation in a scattering atmosphere is briefly reviewed considering the possible approximations and parametrizations. Cloudiness is the main factor governing the planetary radiation balance; climate models should allow for cloud radiation interactions to be properly included. Results are shown concerning the influence of various cloud parameters. Aerosols have a more subtle influence as their role is much weaker, but thier variations can induce local or global climate variations. The need for an improvement in knowledge on aerosol parameters is underlined. Finally, a strategy for both cloud and aerosol radiation studies is proposed.
