The possibility and ramifications of an asteroidal impact on the earth is considered in the light of evidence regarding the amount of objects near the earth and the effects of a recent impact. The impact of an icy piece of comet in the Tunguska region of Siberia is described which leveled 2000 sq km of forest. The importance and effectiveness of monitoring the approach of near-earth objects is underscored, and a call is made for analyzing methods for averting collisions.
