Results are presented on particle measurements made in the Northern Hemisphere by the Viking V3-1 electron spectrometer and the V3-3 positive-ion spectrometer in the altitude range 12,000-13,000 km. Special consideration is given to the region, called the 'cusp proper', where the magnetosheath solar wind plasma penetrates directly into the magnetosphere and can be measured at 13,000 km. It was found that there exists a clear correlation between the densities in the cusp proper calculated from the Viking V-3 experiment in the cusp proper and those in the solar wind calculated from IMP 8 measurements. It is shown that the position of the cusp proper in MLT depends on the sense of the IMF By component, giving a well-defined displacement of the region of maximum occurrence toward earlier MLTs for IMF By less than 0 and a less defined displacement toward later MLTs for IMF By greater than 0.
