Galaxies: Chemical Evolution

The evolution of galaxies is investigated taking into account a detailed description of the stars and a multi-component interstellar medium as well as their interations. Since cooling and heating processes depend on the metal content, dynamical and chemical evolution are intimately coupled. The models demonstrate that energetic processes lead to a self-regulated galactic evolution. The models show that different initial conditions can account for several observed properties and the different types of galaxies.
