We propose to continue the `Local Volume HI Survey' (LVHIS) of all nearby (D < 10 Mpc) galaxies south of declination -30 degrees that were detected in the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS). The main goals of this project are to study the immediate environment, velocity field, alignment, star formation rate and mass function of gas-rich galaxies in the Local Volume and, with accurate distance information from the TRGB brightness as well as a parallel NIR survey at the AAT, derive the true Tully-Fisher relation. Three students have joined the project and publications are under way. Project webpage: http://www.atnf.csiro.au/research/LVHIS
