It has been known for some time that when two electromagnetic waves are simultaneously propagated through a plasma, an interaction will take place. An elementary analysis of this effect in the absence of a magnetic field is presented which does not resort to mean-free-path or relaxation time techniques. The results bring out clearly the nature of the interaction and allow it to be discussed quite simply for arbitrary electron scattering cross section. For clarity the various parameters encountered are assumed to take on values which give the simplest possible result. Elastic collisions only are considered.
