A little-known spectrometer on the WHT offers the highest resolving
power for stellar spectroscopy on La Palma. At the wavelength of the [O
III] 5007 Å line, the resolving power is 116000 or 2.6 km
s-1, but the spectral range is only 8 Å. This
limitation is a fundamental property of the optical design.
