Simple air-shower experiments have shown particle-density spectra exhibiting a sharp knee that appears to bear a complex relationship to the knee in the shower-size spectrum; the position of the knee changed rapidly with altitude in a way indicative of particles with very short interaction mean-free path. Indications emerge that heavy nuclei may dominate this area of the spectrum and may generate unexpectedly dense and narrow showers at PeV energies. An experiment to verify these findings is suggested.
