We present a method of extracting zonal mean, planetary waves, and tides from TIMED/SABER temperature data. The comparisons between the zonal mean temperature and MSIS model and between the TIMED/SABER tides and the GSWM-00 model are made. We determine four-year means; the semi-annual, annual, and quasi-biennial oscillations; the inter-hemispheric asymmetry; and the correlation of trends with the solar radiation. The results indicate that the semi-annual oscillation in temperature has the largest relative amplitude in the tropical upper stratosphere and in the middle mesosphere while the annual oscillation is most dominant in midlatitudes at the same altitude levels. The quasi-biennial oscillation in temperature is most evident in the tropical lower stratosphere but can also be seen in the mean temperature in midlatitudes and in the mean and tides in the tropical mesosphere. Substantial inter-hemispheric asymmetries of the mean temperature and tides are seen in the data. Our analysis indicates that over most of the middle atmosphere, the zonal mean temperature decreases during the four year period analyzed, which is positively correlated with the decreasing solar radiation. The response of the tides to the solar activity variation is also discussed.
