If the atmospheric electric field is measured with a sector type field mill mounted on a cuboidal box, allowance must be made for distortion of the field by the box. The form factor of the mill is a measure of the distortion and depends on the shape of the box and the size of the sectors relative to the box. A numerical method for calculating the form factor is described and some results for different geometries are presented graphically. These results should be useful in the design and comparison of field mills.
