The effect of the ion acoustic decay instability (IADI) on microwave-plasma interactions is studied experimentally. It is found that IADI strongly influences p-polarized microwave plasma interactions and that it is only weakly excited if the unperturbed density profile is relatively steep. The results reveal that only suprathermal electrons are heated due to resonance absorption. For a relatively shallow density profile, the ion acoustic decay instability is strongly excited in the underdense region near the critical surface. Differences between the Prometheus I and III devices are elucidated.
