In view of the intense magnetic field of the pulsars, the derivation of the speed of Alfvén waves is re-examined to determine the effect of the relativistic mass of the magnetic field. A stretched-string model is applied which gives an incorrect result. A wave equation is derived from the equation of motion, including electromagnetic momentum. A modified stretched-string model is shown to give a correct result.
