The hierarchical paradigm is briefly reviewed and the degree to which atomic scale phenomena conform to the expectations of this cosmological model is evaluated. Observational predictions are offered as a means of testing the conceptual validity of the paradigm. Given the existing empirical knowledge of atomic systems and an adequate recognition of the fact that detailed and unbiased comparisons with stellar and galactic systems are hampered by severe observational limitations, it is concluded that atomic systems conform to the general characteristics of scale elements in a global hierarchy.
