Measurements of the aerosol component of the Venus atmosphere by the Venera 11 backscattering nephelometer are reported. Atmospheric backscattering intensities determined upon the descent of the probe from an altitude of 51 km are found to be greatest at altitudes from 51 to 48 km (12 to 18 x 10 to the -5th/m per ster) and also to be significant between 17 and 13 km and 12 and 8 km. Scattering in the 51 to 47.5 km region is attributed to cloud layer III (lower cloud boundary) observed by Venera 9 and 10, corresponding to an effective scattering index of 0.04/ster, a volume scattering coefficient of 2 to 4/km and an optical thickness of about eight. For the lower scattering regions, an effective scattering index of 0.2/ster is derived, with volume scattering coefficients of 0.0001 and 0.0007/m and optical thicknesses of less than 0.5 and 2 for the 17 to 13 km and 12 to 8 km regions, respectively, confirming the transparency of the subcloud region.
