VLF radio equipment aboard the Venera 11 and 12 probes has detected frequent electric discharges (frequencies of 30 per sec and greater) in the Venusian cloud layer. Discharge energy was found to be comparable to that in earth lightning; lightning phenomena had a local character, with one of the active regions having a length of approximately 150 km. The lightning activity in the Venusian atmosphere was found to be higher than that on earth and sufficient for the formation of many of the trace elements of the atmosphere.
