Recent measurements of the stellar mass functions of field galaxies are in conflict with the predictions from the latest generation of hierarchical semi-analytic models of galaxy formation, in which typical elliptical galaxies in the local universe are expected to have built up 50% of their stellar mass by z 0.8. However, studies in the field do not probe cluster-scale densities, where merging is expected to be the dominant process driving the build-up of spheroids in the hierarchical models. We propose to conduct a systematic study of the evolution of the stellar mass function in a sample of 26 X-ray selected clusters located at 0.8 < z < 1.5. In conjuction with proposed MOIRCS J, K-band observations (title: 'Testing hierarchical formation models of brightest cluster galaxies'), the requested GMOS photometry will be used to determine cluster membership and measure stellar masses using stellar population synthesis techniques.
