The preservation of a "chemical status quo" is an important postulate for a comet nucleus sample return mission. On the basis of experiments on radiation induced reduction and oxidation of organics in ice and frozen NH3, a sampling and return temperature of T ≈ 100K is recommended. The temperature should at least not exceed that of the surface near interior (some meters depth), i.e. about 130K.
