Pre-Main-Sequence Stars: Stellar Winds, Pre-Main-Sequence Stars: Mass Loss, Pre-Main-Sequence Stars: Carbon Monoxide

Scientific paper

The properties of winds from low-mass, pre-main sequence stars and their relationship to the CO outflows often associated with them, are discussed. Most pre-main sequence stars have winds with relatively low rates of mass-loss (M˙ ⪉ 10-8Msunyr-1). However, in a significant number of cases (T Tauri stars with P Cygni profiles in Na I lines), M˙ is higher. In these cases, the innermost region of the wind is cool (Tg ⪉ 7000K) and mostly neutral. Forbidden line emission and radio continuum emission are likely to be secondary indicators of the winds, possibly formed in shock regions.
