The combination of infrared imaging and polarimetry is a powerful tool in probing the structure, geometry and physical characteristics of regions of star formation. The authors discuss the effects occurring in these regions that define their polarimetric appearance and consider what information can be extracted from such data. As examples of recent observations, they present results on several objects containing in some cases high mass stars (GGD 27, G35.2N) and in others intermediate to low-mass objects (Re 50, Elias 32, YLW 16).
