The possibilities of applying the principles of synthetic aperture in optics are examined. The following lines of investigation are studied: (1) the realization of composite telescope mirrors with automatic tuning of the elements, (2) the use of partially filled apertures with subsequent optical processing of the image, (3) time synthetic aperture, and (4) synthetic aperture with coherent illumination. The essence of Gabor's information paradox is studied, which consists in that an N-element, thin ring aperture is capable of reconstructing an image containing approximaately N-squared nearly independent elements. It is shown that the principle of synthetic aperture is possibly realized in certain living organisms. The possibility of using aperture synthesis for optical observations from space is considered.
