A general description of the Pioneer 10 and 11 missions is presented. Early telescopic observations of Jupiter are recounted along with the basic ideas of planetary exploration. The structure of the Pioneer satellites and their communications links, electrical systems, launch vehicles and scientific packages and the testing carried out on these systems are described. The data transmitted back to earth are briefly described and include celestial mechanics, occultation observations, meteoroid detection, mapping of Jupiter's magnetic fields and radiation belts, plasma analysis, photographs of Jupiter and its satellites, and the influence of Io on Jovian phenomena. Future missions are outlined and a cost analysis of the two Pioneer missions is provided.
