The dynamic of electric surface potential on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite samples is reported in this work. Kelvin probe microscopy images, in a grounded sample, show an electric potential distribution that varies with time. The origin of this non-equilibrium distribution is related with the mechanical stress induced during sample cleaving. Atomic force images reveal a clear correlation between topography changes and surface potential variations. The experimental results discard surface contamination and sample quality (mosaicity) as relevant factors for the observed potential variations in contradiction with previous results on this topic.
