The discovery of superconductivity above 130 K in a layered material containing Hg-Ba-Ca-Cu-O compounds is reported. Several methods were used to study the microstructure of this material. The material demonstrated an ordered superstructure composed of a defined sequence of unit cells of the two phases observed. Magnetic and resistivity measurements confirm a maximum transition temperature of about 133 K, higher than previously recorded values for similar compounds containing thallium and bismuth. It is suggested that Hg-1223 is responsible for superconductivity at this temperature.
