Measurement data on illumination in the Venusian atmosphere recorded by Venera-8 are interpreted along with supplementary ground-based measurement data. A very simple optical model of the Venusian atmosphere is considered, consisting of a homogeneous cloud with a gas layer situated below it. Fundamental optical characteristics of the cloud are obtained. Illumination in the atmosphere of Venus is derived as a function of height for various values of solar zenith distance.
