The luminescence of the lunar day and night sky, measured with an astrophotometer aboard Lunokhod-2, was higher than expected in the UV and especially in the visible region of the spectrum. The excess luminescence reveals a characteristic run with solar zenith distance and, if attributed to a diffusive medium, gives the same ratio of visible albedo to UV albedo as lunar dust. It is shown that the measurement results can be explained by the presence of a very rarefied swarm of dust particles around the moon, scattering light from the sun and earth and possibly formed as a result of meteor bombardment of the moon's surface.
