Possibilities for realization of an image photon counting system to be used as the detector for the high resolution camera of the large space telescope were investigated. A four stage magnetically focused intensifier/lead oxide vidicon system gives excellent photometric performance but might prove difficult to space qualify; its size and weight are greater than those of any other system considered. An intensified EBS (Electron Bombarded Silicon) detector assembly is expected to give adequate photometric quality and is made of rugged and well-tried components. An attractive alternative promising superior performance to the EBS system is one employing a curved channel microchannel plate wafer intensifier lens coupled to a lead oxide vidicon.
