The CCD requirements necessary for X-ray spectroscopy in astronomical missions are reviewed. A program designed to enhance CCD performance for the Joint European Telescope instrument and the X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission is presented, and the X-ray performance obtained from the CCDs is described. The results of an assessment of the CCD radiation-tolerant properties are reported.
