Earth Ionosphere: Structure

Scientific paper

The mid-latitude trough is considered over the altitude region of 500 - 1000 km in the nocturnal winter ionosphere. Experimental data of the mid-latitude trough are analyzed using observations of the distribution of concentrations of O+ and H+ ions from measurements with a radiofrequency mass spectrometer on the "Oreol-2" satellite in January and February 1974, under conditions of minimum solar activity. It is shown that the width and shape of the midlatitude trough in electron or total ion concentration depends on the relative content of H+ and O+ ions.
