The spatial structure and luminosity function of the open star cluster NGC 2420 are studied on the basis of one V and one B plate. The limiting V magnitude is 17.8, and a technique is used that excludes 50% to 55% of the background stars. Space densities and apparent stellar densities are examined for three groups of stars that include, respectively, almost the entire giant branch, stars near the turnoff point, and stars that have evolved along the main sequence. The cluster luminosity function is found to exhibit characteristics expected for old open clusters.
