Both direct and resonant capture of α-particles into specific states for 7Be(α, γ)11C, 7Li(α, γ)11B, 14C(α, γ)18O, 15O(α, γ)19Ne, and 18O(α, γ)22Ne have been studied theoretically. It is shown that the rates of some of these reactions could increase considerably depending upon spectroscopic factors. For cool, degenerate matter after helium burning in low-mass red giants, it is demonstrated that the 14N(e-, ν)14C(α, γ)18O (CNO) chain can enhance the production of neutrons from 22Ne(α, n)25Mg up to a factor of 10.
