A one-dimensional steady model which includes the effects of recombination is used to determine the merging rate of a system consisting of uniform antiparallel magnetic fields convected by plasma flow into a thin current sheet. It is shown that the merging rate is fixed by the parameters of the system. Numerical results for parameters appropriate to comets are presented. These show that recombination results in a large density within the field reversal region which, in turn, is proportional to beta of the incoming plasma. The analysis is extended to include nonlinear effects by allowing the conductivity to be a function of the magnetic field.
