In the 30-40 large solar energetic particle (SEP) events measured by the Solar Isotope Spectrometer since launch in August 1997, various spectral shapes have been observed, including hard power laws and soft exponentials. On occasion, the power law indices are found to be significantly different for different elements, something unexpected from simple Fermi-type shock acceleration. In this presentation we classify the observed spectral characteristics of the SEP events measured to date and examine correlations with composition, nominal charge-to-mass ratios, source location and phase of the solar cycle in an attempt to understand the potential cause(s) of the differences.
