Some methods for improving and generalizing the results of superposed epoch analyses of geophysical data are shown. Estimators which have optimized weights for the superposition, or combination of the time series, and which allow a reconstruction of the common structures in each of the individual time series are developed. The estimators also lead to more flexible tests for the validity of the hypothesis of a common structure in the time series, and for the rejection of any time series which do not have this common structure. To emphasize the usefulness of the methods, an example which looks for common structure in the interplanetary magnetic field, with times keyed to the onset of substorm expansive phases is included.
