The state of the Earth's environment and its change with time is monitored by various sensors which are custom-tailored to fulfil very specific tasks in environmental research. Sophisticated geodetic spaceborne positioning and gravity field determination technology can provide very important information about our environment and its change such as the large-scale motion and deformation of tectonic plates, the small-scale deformation of surface structures, the change of the length of day, the change of the direction of the Earth's rotation axis, the structure of the Earth's gravity field, the change of mean sea level, the dynamical sea surface topography, etc.
