Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters (SGRs, a.k.a. Magnetars) usually manifest themselves as quiescent X-ray pulsars, as sporadic emitters of bursts of hard X-rays (<100 keV), and as rare emitters of giant flares, reaching photon energies up to 1 MeV. They are not known nor expected to emit gamma-rays in the 0.03-50 GeV range, within the AGILE sensitivity limit. Such a detection would therefore represent a truly exceptional and surprising scientific case, that we propose to study with a triggered observation by XMM-Newton, the most sensitive X-ray observatory available, in order to search for any signature of the gamma-ray emitting event in any of the known timing or spectral properties of these objects.
