Accurate predictions of NIF target performance depend critically on shock timing and material compressibility. Current Nova experiments are designed to test our understanding of shock physics in actual target materials. Shock breakout measurements test shock timing through samples of ablator material. Experiments to measure the compressibility of D2 ice are planned to further increase the margin for ignition in NIF target designs.
