First validation results for stratospheric NO2 profiles retrieved from SCIAMACHY limb scattering observations are presented. The official operational offline (OL) processor NO2 profile data product (version 2.1 as provided by DLR in April 2004) was compared to HALOE version 19 solar occultation measurements. Furthermore, two scientific SCIAMACHY NO2 profile data products - developed at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) in Cambridge, U.S.A., and at the Institute of Environmental Physics (IUP/IFE) at Bremen, Germany - were compared with LPMA-DOAS and SAOZ balloon and HALOE (version 19) and SAGE II (version 6.20) satellite occultation measurements. The validation results presented here are of preliminary nature due to the known Envisat pointing inaccuracies translating to SCIAMACHY limb tangent height errors of up to 3 km. The operational OL2.1 NO2 concentrations are found to be systematically higher by about 50 % than photochemically corrected HALOE measurements for the 25 to 40 km altitude. Both scientific data products are generally in good agreement with the balloon validation measurements within about 15 - 20% or within the error bars of the profiles although in some cases significant differences of up to 50 % between the SAO and the IUP/IFE retrievals exist. The IUP/IFE scientific product agrees to within 15 % with photochemically corrected HALOE measurements between 22 and 33 km altitude. Moreover, the IUP/IFE scientific NO2 concentrations are about 10 - 35 % higher than photochemically corrected SAGE II NO2 concentrations within the 20 - 28 km altitude range.
