Heppher's (1977) high-latitude electric field model is used to study the role of solar illumination in the formation of the spatial structure of electron density and charged-particle temperature in the polar ionosphere. Calculations of the spatial distribution of particle temperature and density are made for the 100-700 km altitude region on the basis of the model of Mingalev et al. (1982). It is shown that solar illumination has a very significant effect on the formation of the spatial distribution of charged-particle density and electron temperature in the polar ionosphere. Its effect on the ion-temperature distribution is found to be insignificant.
