We analyze the ROCSAT-1 Ionospheric Plasma and Electrodynamics Instrument (IPEI) data collected between March 1999 and December 2000 to study the global characteristics of the vertical ion motions in the low-latitude ionosphere under various conditions of season, solar and geomagnetic activities. As ROCSAT-1 is a 35-degree inclined circular orbiting satellite at the altitude near 600 km, observations with global coverage in local time and longitude are available every 52 days. The two-year set of ion drift data from IPEI provides us good opportunity to validate the previously reported statistical features concerning the dependencies of vertical plasma drifts on local time, longitude, season and geomagnetic activity at equatorial latitudes. In particular, the details of the longitudinal (and geomagnetic field configuration) dependence of ion drifts for all local times can be investigated to take advantage of good longitudinal coverage of the ROCSAT-1 orbit. In addition, the ROCSAT-IPEI can provide, probably for the first time, a large set of ion velocity data over the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) regions (tropical latitudes). Thus, we are interested in identifying the important statistical features of ion drifts at the EIA latitudes from the IPEI data. Moreover, the correlation between the vertical ion drifts and the plasma bubbles at pre-midnight local times will be examined in detail to find out the critical values of the prereversal upward drift enhancement required for the occurrence of fast rising bubbles under various space environment conditions.
