Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) in the early universe are quickly becoming one of the most important galaxy samples, as they probe the initial stages of galaxy formation. We propose to obtain H-alpha, H- beta, [OIII], and [NII] emission line fluxes of 6 LAEs at redshifts between 2.1 and 2.5 from NIR spectra using Gemini/NIFS. The physical nature of LAEs, including mass, age, metallicity, ISM, and dust, is poorly understood. Our unique sample is based on an extensive blind IFU spectroscopic survey in the GOODS-N, MUNICS, and COSMOS fields covering 170 square arcmin; it provides the essential base for follow-up H and K band spectroscopy, allowing us to select targets that have all relevant emission lines fall in between night sky lines. We have an aggressive campaign to provide a robust understanding of these important and elusive objects. The Gemini/NIFS observations focus on the brightest LAEs. All candidates are secure LAEs and have secure positions.
